just realized there are actually 8 states with no income tax and i had no idea lol. alaska, florida, nevada, new hampshire, south dakota, tennessee, texas, and wyoming. like literally zero state income tax which is wild. washington's kind of in that category too but they tax capital gains over 278k so it's not quite the same. the catch though? these states with no income tax gotta make money somehow so they hit you with higher property taxes, sales taxes, or gaming taxes instead. nothing's free i guess. but here's the thing - if you're retired, states with no income tax don't touch your 401k, iras, or social security either which is actually huge. still gotta pay federal taxes obviously but at least you dodge the state part. thinking about this more now, especially if you're living on a fixed income. definitely worth considering where you actually live if taxes are eating up your money
