Just realized how wild the state gas taxes actually are depending on where you live. Like, California drivers are paying nearly 70 cents per gallon just in state taxes alone—that's before the federal 18.4 cents kicks in. Meanwhile Alaska is chilling at 9 cents. Absolute difference.

So back in 2024, seven states bumped up their gas taxes right at the start of summer driving season. California went from about 68 cents to 70 cents per gallon. Illinois hit 67 cents—second highest in the country. Indiana, Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, Virginia all adjusted too. The state gas taxes compound fast when you factor in excise taxes, environmental fees, sales taxes, inspection charges—it's like five different things stacked on top of each other.

On average across the US, state taxes add around 32 cents per gallon. Combined with federal tax, that's 50+ cents per gallon just in taxes before any actual fuel cost. No wonder people complain about pump prices. The state gas taxes alone vary by like 60 cents depending on where you pump. Wild how much geography matters for your driving budget.
