So I've been wondering about this for a while - is tomatoes bad for dogs? Turns out the answer isn't as straightforward as I thought, and I figured I'd share what I learned since a lot of pet owners probably have the same question.

The short version: ripe tomatoes are actually fine for dogs in moderation. They're packed with vitamins, antioxidants and can support digestive health. But here's where it gets tricky - green or unripe tomatoes are a no-go. Same goes for the stems and leaves. These contain higher levels of naturally occurring chemicals called tomatines and solanines that can be toxic to dogs.

I talked to some vets about this and they all emphasize the same thing - moderation is everything. Think of tomatoes as an occasional snack, not a meal replacement. The recommendation is to keep treats like this to around 10% of your dog's daily caloric intake. A slice or two from your salad a few times a week? That's totally fine. Cherry tomatoes should be cut in half to avoid choking hazards.

If you're feeding your dog tomatoes, make sure they're ripe, washed thoroughly, and all green parts are removed. Pesticides are commonly used on tomatoes, so washing is important. Cut them into manageable pieces depending on your dog's size.

As for puppies - they can eat tomatoes too, but it's worth checking with your vet first since they have more sensitive stomachs. One vet I read actually mentioned being cautious about introducing exotic treats to puppies when it strays from their main diet.

Nutrition-wise, one cup of raw grape tomatoes has about 3 grams of fiber, 41mg of vitamin C, 395mg of potassium, and solid amounts of calcium, iron and magnesium. The fiber supports digestive health, the vitamin C boosts immunity, and the potassium helps with muscle and nerve function. Plus tomatoes are loaded with antioxidants that help protect cells from damage.

What about cooked tomatoes or tomato sauce? Skip those. Tomato sauce usually has garlic and onion mixed in, which are actually toxic to dogs. Canned tomatoes tend to be loaded with sodium too. Same issue with tomato soup.

So to circle back - are tomatoes bad for dogs? Only if they're unripe, green, or prepared with other ingredients. Ripe, plain tomatoes given occasionally in small amounts? They're actually a pretty solid snack option that your dog will probably enjoy. Just keep it reasonable and always introduce new foods slowly to make sure your dog tolerates them well.
