So I was wondering if my dog could have some watermelon during the hot months, and turns out the answer is yes. Dogs can actually eat watermelon and it's pretty good for them honestly. It's basically just water and some vitamins, so it's a solid hydrating snack when it's scorching outside. The thing is you gotta be careful about a few things first though.
The seeds and rind are a no-go. Like seriously, don't let your dog near those parts because they can cause choking or mess with their digestion. I learned that if you leave your pup to just go wild on watermelon, the sudden water and fiber intake could upset their stomach pretty badly. So the move is to cut it into small bite-sized pieces, remove everything except the actual fruit part, and just give them a few pieces here and there as a treat, not like a main snack.
Frozen watermelon is apparently a vibe too if you wanna cool them down in summer. Just make sure it's in small pieces and no seeds or rind attached. Some people also puree it but honestly that seems like overkill. The vitamins in watermelon are legit though—vitamin C for healing, vitamin A for skin and muscles, potassium, all that good stuff. And since it's like 92% water, it keeps them hydrated which is clutch during hot weather.
One thing though, don't give them moldy watermelon or any fruit that's past its prime. And definitely check with your vet before introducing any new food to your dog just to be safe. But yeah, can dogs eat watermelon? Totally, just do it smart and in moderation.
