Just realized how many people don't actually understand when their first Social Security check shows up. Like, you don't get it the day you apply – it comes the month AFTER the month it covers. So if you start in September, you're actually getting that payment in October. Kinda wild.

Also turns out you can apply up to four months early if you want to plan ahead. Most people wait until 62 to start, but honestly delaying until 70 gets you way bigger checks monthly. Depends on your situation though.

Here's the thing nobody talks about – if you're born between the 1st and 10th, you get paid the second Wednesday of every month. 11th-20th? Third Wednesday. 21st-31st? Fourth Wednesday. Your birthday literally determines your payment date. Never knew that.

Oh and if you turn 62 but weren't born on the 1st or 2nd of the month, you're not eligible THAT month – you have to wait until the next one. The government's weird about it. So if you're born Sept 15 and turn 62 in September, you can't actually claim until October.

Basically, figure out when you want to claim, do the math on your birth date, and plan your finances accordingly. Don't get caught off guard when that first check doesn't show up right away.
