So I just found out dogs can actually have oranges and honestly it's kind of a game-changer for treat options. Been giving my pup the same boring store-bought treats forever, but apparently fresh orange slices are totally safe and they're actually packed with good stuff like vitamin C, fiber, and potassium. Who knew right?
Obviously there's a catch though. You can't just hand your dog a whole orange and call it a day. The peel and seeds have some nasty toxins in them, so you gotta peel everything off first. And yeah, can dogs have orange in larger amounts? Not really—one to three slices max per day is the sweet spot. Too much and they'll get an upset stomach, diarrhea, the whole mess.
Also if your dog has diabetes or any health issues, probably skip it or check with your vet first. Same goes for puppies—their digestive systems are more sensitive so you gotta introduce it super slowly. I learned that the hard way with my neighbor's puppy lol.
The hydration thing is pretty cool though, especially in summer since oranges are like 90% water. And it's a lower calorie snack if your dog needs to watch their weight. Just keep it occasional and you're good. Fresh oranges only though—skip the canned stuff because that's loaded with sugar.
Anyone else been giving their dogs oranges or am I late to this?
