Just found out Elon Musk actually clarified his nationality and heritage thing back in 2024. So apparently he's been described as Afrikaner his whole life, but he came out saying he's actually from British/English background. The wild part? He compared himself to J.R.R. Tolkien, who was also born in South Africa but had English parents. Both born in South Africa, both with British ancestry. Musk was born in Pretoria in 1971, and Tolkien way back in 1892 in Bloemfontein. Apparently Musk is a huge Tolkien fan anyway, so the connection probably resonates with him. Seems like there's been a lot of confusion about his actual nationality and cultural background over the years. The difference matters too - Afrikaner heritage comes from Dutch and French settlers speaking Afrikaans, while English South Africans trace back to 19th century British settlers. Pretty interesting how someone's actual nationality can get misrepresented for so long. Makes you wonder what else people get wrong about public figures.
