Just realized I've never actually microchipped my dog and honestly had no idea what's involved. Looked it up and it's way simpler than I thought - basically costs around $50 to get it done, which is pretty reasonable when you think about it.

So the chip itself is literally tiny, like smaller than a grain of rice, and they just inject it under the skin between the shoulder blades. No surgery, no anesthesia, just a needle slightly bigger than a vaccine shot. Takes like two seconds. The actual cost of microchipping a dog depends on where you go though - vet clinics charge more than non-profit animal clinics which sometimes do it free or super cheap. Location matters too, big cities are pricier.

What surprised me is that only 15% of lost dogs without microchips get reunited with their owners. That's insane. But apparently if your dog has a microchip, the chances go way up. The chip has your dog's ID number and when shelters scan it, they can pull up your info. About 10 million pets go missing every year in the US so it's actually a real problem.

The tricky part is making sure you register the chip after getting it done and keep your contact info updated. Some vets include registration in the cost of microchipping a dog, some don't - you have to ask. And if you move, you gotta update the registry or the whole thing is useless.

Honestly for fifty bucks and like five minutes of time, seems worth it just for peace of mind. Especially since my dog is basically an escape artist. Anyone else not done this yet?
