Tether Rolls Out Modular Mining Hardware With Canaan
Tether introduces modular hash board systems, enabling flexible upgrades and separating compute, power, and cooling for efficiency gains.
Collaboration with Canaan and ACME delivers customized mining hardware optimized for immersion cooling and industrial-scale deployments.
New architecture enhances control, lowers energy costs, and improves performance across large interconnected mining operations.
Tether is expanding its Bitcoin mining infrastructure with modular compute systems developed alongside Canaan Inc. and ACME Swisstech. The company disclosed the move recently as part of ongoing engineering work. The effort focuses on improving energy control, lowering costs, and increasing performance across large-scale mining operations through redesigned hardware architecture.
Modular Design Breaks From Traditional Mining Rigs
Instead of using fully assembled mining rigs, Tether is building systems around application-specific hash board modules. These modules integrate into its own control architecture, thermal systems, and software stack. As a result, operators can adjust performance and upgrade parts without replacing entire machines.
However, traditional mining systems rely on fixed, sealed units with limited flexibility. Those systems tie performance, cooling, and upgrades together. Tether’s approach separates these elements, allowing independent optimization across each layer of the infrastructure.
Separation of Compute and Power Improves Efficiency
Tether’s system separates compute from power supply and enclosure design. This structure enables targeted improvements in each component. When paired with immersion cooling, the setup reduces energy overhead and improves operational efficiency.
Notably, large mining sites currently operate thousands of independent units with limited coordination. This limits system-wide optimization. Tether’s architecture introduces more control across interconnected systems, improving overall performance and availability.
Collaboration Drives Custom Hardware Development
The project builds on collaboration with Canaan Inc. and ACME Swisstech. According to Paolo Ardoino, Tether aims to redesign mining infrastructure with modular compute systems. Giv Zanganeh said the design shifts away from retail-focused hardware toward industrial-scale solutions.
Nangeng Zhang stated that Canaan is delivering customized hash board modules through its Avalon platform. These modules support flexible deployment and improved efficiency, especially in immersion-cooled environments. Meanwhile, the rollout extends Tether’s earlier work on its open-source Mining OS and Mining SDK.
