just been looking into high net worth banking options because apparently when you hit a certain income level, regular banks don't really cut it anymore. turns out there's a whole different tier of services designed specifically for people with serious money.
so apparently the big players are J.P. Morgan Private Bank, Bank of America, Citi, and Chase Private Client. each one has a different vibe though. J.P. Morgan is like the premium option—you get access to teams of strategists and economists, plus global investment opportunities most people won't see. sounds pretty elite ngl.
Bank of America requires like $3 million minimum but they give you a dedicated team handling your portfolio and trust stuff. Citi wants $5 million and operates in like 160 countries, so if you're doing international wealth management that could be your move. then there's Chase which is more accessible—only $150k minimum—so it's for people making serious money but not quite ultra-wealthy yet.
what's interesting is that these private banking divisions are basically a different experience from regular banking. you get a relationship manager instead of calling some 1-800 number, personalized investment advice, estate planning, all that. no transaction fees, ATM refunds, exclusive events.
the common thread with all this high net worth banking stuff is that it's really about having someone who actually knows your financial situation and can help you plan long-term. not just moving money around but actual wealth management. some people mentioned smaller regional banks are actually getting competitive too by offering similar services with a more personal touch.
if you're thinking about switching to private banking, apparently you gotta book consultations directly since they don't advertise everything online. worth exploring if you've got the assets for it though.
