Just been scrolling through some old market takes from a couple years back, and it's wild how much the breakthrough stocks narrative has evolved. You know what's interesting though? The pattern of how innovation actually moves markets never really changes.
Think about it - Netflix exploded when streaming became mainstream, Apple went parabolic with the iPhone, Amazon dominated with cloud services, and then Nvidia just took off on the AI chip wave. More recently Tesla showed what happens when you nail a new category like EVs. The lesson? Find the companies riding the right innovation wave and they can absolutely run.
Back in late 2023, there were some interesting breakthrough stocks being discussed in the tech space, particularly around AI. Let me break down three that were getting serious attention.
Microsoft was one of the big plays. Their CoPilot AI assistant was supposed to be a game-changer - kind of like an iPhone moment for enterprise software. Piper Sandler was talking about potential $10 billion in annual AI revenue within a few years. The bet was that if their AI business actually took off in 2024, the stock would see a significant lift. That's the kind of breakthrough innovation that moves stocks.
GitLab was another one worth watching. They partnered with Google to build AI-assisted features into their development platform. Alphabet even bought shares twice and ended up owning 2.5% of the company - which basically signals that even Google thinks this is going somewhere. The idea was that if adoption of these new AI tools really took off, GTLB could soar.
Then there's Intel, which was positioning itself around Edge AI - basically letting companies and consumers run AI locally on their own devices instead of relying on distant data centers. Faster, cheaper, more secure. They had Xeon chips already shipping with strong AI demand, and they were working on Grand Rapids chips that were supposed to be way more efficient at AI tasks. Plus their Gaudi chips for AI training were seeing doubled orders. These kinds of breakthrough innovations in chip architecture are exactly what can drive big moves.
The whole story was about finding the companies that would actually capture value from the AI wave. Whether those specific plays worked out or not, the framework is solid - watch for the companies with real breakthrough tech, solid partnerships, and actual customer traction. That's how you spot stocks positioned to move in a big way.
