Just discovered this interesting retirement study from 2024 that ranked the cheapest countries to retire globally. Turns out if you're looking for affordable retirement abroad, the usual suspects aren't always your best bet.

The research compared 15 nations using cost of living, rent, groceries, healthcare quality, safety, and peacefulness. Some of the findings surprised me - Japan ranked #1 for the cheapest country to retire with around $497 average rent and solid healthcare at 79.7 quality index. Malaysia came in second with even lower costs ($312 rent) but slightly lower safety scores.

Other standouts in the cheapest places to retire: Taiwan ($399 rent, excellent healthcare at 86.4), Oman ($464 rent), and Czech Republic ($758 rent). If you prefer Europe, Portugal, Croatia, and Slovenia all made the list with better safety ratings than some cheaper Asian options.

Interestingly, some Eastern European countries like Bulgaria ($400 rent) and Hungary ($463 rent) ranked high too. The study weighted peacefulness triple, so countries with lower conflict made the cut even if they weren't rock-bottom cheap.

Obviously these rankings are from 2024 data, so current costs might've shifted. But if you're serious about finding an affordable retirement destination, this breakdown of the cheapest country to retire gives a solid starting point. Healthcare and safety matter just as much as rent prices when choosing where to retire abroad.
