Just scrolled through the latest wealth rankings and honestly, it's wild how concentrated things are at the top. Between 750 and 800 billionaires in America, and they collectively control about a fifth of the entire GDP. That's roughly $6 trillion in the hands of less than a thousand people.

But here's what really stands out - to even crack the top 10 richest people in the united states, you need at least $100 billion. Not million. Billion. And the gap between them? Massive.

Elon Musk's sitting at the top with around $200 billion, though his net worth swings wildly because so much of it's tied to Tesla stock. One day he's the richest, next day Jeff Bezos is breathing down his neck. Bezos hovers around $195 billion, mostly from Amazon and AWS. Those two basically trade places depending on market mood.

Mark Zuckerberg's third with roughly $180 billion from Meta. Interesting how three of the richest people in the united states basically built their empires on tech platforms - social media, e-commerce, search.

Then you've got Larry Ellison at $140 billion from Oracle. Most people don't know his name because Oracle does infrastructure stuff - databases, server software - the boring backend tech that powers everything else. That's kind of the pattern though. The less famous names often made their money in B2B tech.

Warren Buffett's around $133 billion through Berkshire Hathaway. His approach is totally different - he's an investor who bought a failing textile company and turned it into a holding company for everything from insurance to ice cream shops.

Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer both made their fortunes at Microsoft, sitting around $130 billion and $120 billion respectively. Gates basically brought computers to regular people. Ballmer took over when things got messy - antitrust suits, Apple coming back, Windows crashing. He stabilized things.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin co-founded Google. Their wealth fluctuates a lot depending on the market - Page could be worth $114 billion or $150 billion on any given day. Same core story though - they built a search engine that became a data and advertising empire.

Jensen Huang rounds out the richest people in the united states at around $112 billion from NVIDIA. He's the newcomer to this club, but AI demand has absolutely exploded the value of his chipmaking company.

What's striking is how dominated this top 10 is by tech. Almost all of them made their money in software, hardware, or internet services. That's been the wealth-creation machine for the last 20+ years. The old money families? Barely visible anymore.
