just found out cucumbers are actually super safe for dogs and honestly kind of a game changer if you have a pup that needs to watch their weight. like, they're basically 96% water and have almost no calories, which is wild.
so apparently you can just give them raw cucumber slices as a snack and dogs are totally fine with it. one cup is like 15 calories. the thing is though - moderation matters. treats shouldn't be more than 10% of their daily calories, so don't go crazy. smaller dogs get a couple slices a few times a week, bigger ones can have more but still keep it reasonable.
there's some stuff to watch for though. cut them into bite-sized pieces so they don't choke, and some vets say remove the seeds just in case your dog can't digest them well. also definitely wash them first to get rid of pesticides. oh and never give pickled cucumbers - apparently the brine has stuff that's bad for them.
the cool part is they're packed with potassium for muscle function and have antioxidants too. plus on hot days they're basically a hydration snack. if you have a chubby pup on a diet this could actually be a solid low-cal treat alternative to the usual stuff. anyone else giving their dog cucumbers or am i late to this?
