Been trying to get my portfolio sorted and honestly, there's way too many tools out there. Spent the last few weeks testing different ones and wanted to share what actually works.
If you're just starting out and don't want to spend money, Empower's free tier is solid. You get a personal dashboard where you can throw all your accounts in one place - checking, savings, investments, whatever. Their Investment Checkup tool helps you see if your portfolio is actually diversified or if you're just guessing. The fee analyzer is actually useful too because it shows you how much you're bleeding in costs. For free portfolio management software, this is probably the best bang for buck.
But if you've got a more complicated situation - like real estate, crypto holdings, private equity stuff - Vyzer is wild. It tracks everything together, public and private investments. You can literally upload documents and it figures out what assets they represent. The platform connects to like 18,000 financial institutions globally so syncing is pretty seamless. Not free though, but worth it if you're juggling multiple investment types.
For dividend tracking specifically, Sharesight is underrated. Most tools just show you total return, but this one breaks down your income streams - dividends, distributions, all of it. You can even project future dividend income. Integrates with over 170 brokers so importing is easy.
Stock Rover is more for people who want to dig into the numbers. Monte Carlo simulations, correlation analysis, rebalancing suggestions - it's thorough. The Future Income tool is handy for seeing what your dividends might look like down the road. Morningstar's X-Ray is similar but more focused on asset allocation and sector breakdown.
If you want everything in one ecosystem - budgeting, tracking, investing - Quicken or Mint work. Mint's especially good if you're trying to save more money to actually invest in the first place. Tracks expenses automatically and there's free portfolio management software features built in.
Honestly the best tool depends on what you actually need. Simple portfolio? Empower free tier. Complex holdings? Vyzer. Income focused? Sharesight. Want to analyze everything? Stock Rover. Don't overthink it - just pick one and start tracking instead of leaving your investments scattered everywhere.
