Just spent some time digging into the most affordable places to live in usa with decent safety records, and honestly the data is pretty interesting. A lot of people don't realize how many solid options exist outside the usual big city markets.
Ohio keeps showing up over and over - like 7 cities in the top 15 have great cost of living combined with low crime. New Philadelphia caught my attention first with annual costs around $35k and a violent crime rate under 1 per 1000 people. That's the kind of combo you rarely see.
If you're looking at the midwest, New Ulm Minnesota is worth checking out too - only 14k people but livability score of 82, and the violent crime rate is basically nonexistent at 0.29 per 1000. San Elizario Texas is another one that stood out, super affordable with home values around $167k.
The most affordable places to live in usa that also feel safe tend to be smaller towns rather than major metros. Columbus Indiana and Butler Pennsylvania are bigger than some of these, but still way cheaper than coastal markets. Even the pricier entries on this list like Edwardsville Illinois are hitting under $45k annually for total cost of living with crime rates that most people would consider solid.
It's wild how many genuinely affordable cities exist when you actually look at the data. The key is finding places that don't sacrifice safety for affordability - and apparently there are more options than people think.
