Just went down a rabbit hole looking at cheapest and safest places to live in the US and honestly some of these towns I'd never even heard of. Apparently Ohio is killing it for affordable housing - like 7 of the top 15 cheapest and safest places to live are there. That's wild.
New Philadelphia, Ohio caught my eye first. Home values around $186k, mortgage running about $1,100 a month, and the crime rates are pretty solid. New Ulm, Minnesota is another one that stood out - violent crime rate under 0.3 per 1,000 people. San Elizario, Texas has some of the lowest property crime I saw listed.
What's interesting is how these cheapest and safest places to live don't feel like they're compromising much on livability scores. Places like Edwardsville, Illinois and Trenton, Michigan are scoring in the high 80s and 90s for livability while keeping annual living costs under $45k. I was expecting more of a trade-off between affordability and safety, but these towns seem to have actually figured it out.
The data's from early 2025 so it's pretty recent. Biggest takeaway? If you're willing to move somewhere less trendy, you can genuinely find cheapest and safest places to live without breaking the bank. Columbus, Indiana and Hamilton, Ohio are bigger towns if you want more of a city feel but still want that affordability combo. Honestly makes you wonder why more people aren't looking at these options instead of fighting over expensive coastal markets.
