So I've been giving my dog cucumber slices as treats and honestly didn't realize it was actually good for them? Looked it up and yeah, turns out cucumbers are super safe - basically just water and barely any calories, which is perfect for my pup who's always begging for snacks.
The main thing is moderation though. Vets say treats should only be like 10% of their daily calories, so I'm not going overboard. I usually just toss a few slices in their bowl or cut them into bite-sized pieces to avoid any choking issues.
One thing I wasn't sure about - can dogs eat cucumber skin? Turns out it's totally fine and actually has extra nutrients, just make sure you wash it first to get rid of any pesticide residue. Same with the seeds, most dogs digest them no problem, though some might have issues.
What I avoid though is pickled cucumbers - apparently the brine has stuff like onions and garlic that's actually harmful. Raw cucumber is the way to go. My dog's been way more hydrated on hot days since I started doing this, plus it's such a cheap and healthy alternative to those expensive dog treats. Anyone else giving their dog cucumbers?
