Just caught Amazon's massive Spain play at Mobile World Congress 2026 - and honestly, this is the kind of infrastructure bet that shapes entire regions. They're committing €33.7 billion total now, up from the €15.7 billion they announced back in 2024. That's an additional €18 billion on top, which is serious money.
What caught my attention is the scale here. We're talking about AWS expanding their data center footprint in Aragón with full renewable energy operations - they've been running 100% renewable since 2022. But it's not just compute capacity. Amazon is building actual manufacturing infrastructure too: a server plant and an AI/ML assembly center. That's 1,800 new jobs right there, plus another 30,000 full-time equivalent positions supported across local businesses annually.
The GDP impact projection is wild - €31.7 billion added to Spain's economy through 2035. For context, they've already invested over €20 billion in Spain since 2011 across retail, logistics, and cloud infrastructure. This new commitment shows they're doubling down on the region as a strategic hub for European AI and cloud operations.
What's interesting from a market perspective is the timing. Europe is scrambling to build its own AI infrastructure capacity, and Amazon is essentially saying: we're not waiting, we're investing heavily in Spain right now. The sustainability angle matters too - water positive by 2030, carbon-free energy. That's not just PR; it's competitive positioning.
Plus €30 million in community programs through 2035. Honestly, when you see a tech giant making this kind of long-term infrastructure bet on a single country, it signals confidence in both the market and the policy environment. Spain's positioning itself as a serious European tech hub, and Amazon's backing that thesis with real capital.
