So I was looking back at the bestselling EVs from 2023 and honestly, the variety is pretty wild now. The market really shifted that year with all kinds of options hitting the mainstream.
Tesla absolutely dominated the numbers. The Model Y was their clear winner with over 228,000 units sold in 2022 alone - that compact SUV just kept flying off lots. The Model 3 wasn't far behind either, moving around 200,000 sedans. Even the Model X and Model S found their way into 33,000 and 26,000 homes respectively. What's interesting is how the pricing came down to make these more accessible.
But here's what caught my attention - it wasn't just Tesla anymore. Ford's Mustang Mach-E hit nearly 40,000 sales that year, which is pretty impressive for a legacy automaker jumping into EVs hard. The styling and performance on that one really resonated with buyers. Meanwhile, the Chevy Bolt became this unexpected hero at $27,800 - GreenCars was calling it the best EV deal going, and 25,000 people agreed, picking up the standard or EUV version.
On the luxury side, Hyundai's Ioniq 5 moved over 22,000 units with that futuristic design and 300+ mile range. Kia's EV6 brought in about 20,000 buyers too. The Volkswagen ID.4 had been holding steady around 20,000 as well, proving that traditional automakers could actually compete in this space. Even Rivian's R1T, this wild electric truck idea, delivered over 13,000 units in 2022.
Looking at the bestselling EVs from that period, what really stood out was the range - most hitting 300+ miles EPA-estimated. The Model Y topped out around 330 miles, Model S hit 405, Model 3 got 358. That's when people stopped worrying about range anxiety as much. Prices varied wildly though - from the Bolt at under $28k to the Model X pushing over $100k.
The whole best selling evs 2023 lineup showed that EVs had finally gone mainstream. You had affordable options, performance options, family SUVs, even trucks. That's a complete ecosystem now.
