Been looking into where I could actually afford to retire without burning through savings, and stumbled on some interesting data about the cheapest countries for retirement. Turns out a lot of places beat the US on affordability and quality of life combined.
Obviously everyone talks about Southeast Asia - Malaysia and Thailand tier places - but what surprised me was how many European options are legit cheap. Portugal, Czech Republic, and Croatia are showing solid numbers on both cost and healthcare. Japan's also on the list, which I didn't expect given the developed economy status.
The 15 cheapest countries for retirement that actually made the cut factored in more than just rent. They looked at cost of living, grocery prices, healthcare quality, safety, and peacefulness. So it's not just about finding somewhere dirt cheap - it's about balance.
If you're serious about retiring abroad, Malaysia and Taiwan seem to be the sweet spot for budget-friendly retirement with decent infrastructure. But honestly, even places like Bulgaria and Hungary are pulling solid numbers if you want Europe without the price tag of Western countries.
Anyone else been researching retirement abroad? The data makes it seem way more doable than I thought.
