Been thinking about the disadvantages of debit card lately and honestly there's some stuff banks don't really advertise that caught me off guard.
First thing - those holds at gas stations are wild. Used to be $125 but now they can put a $175 hold on your account just when you swipe at the pump. If you're not sitting on a fat checking balance, that's overdraft fees waiting to happen. Took me a minute to figure out why I suddenly got dinged. Workaround is just go inside and tell the cashier exactly how much gas you want, but even then you gotta check if that station even does holds.
Then there's the spending limit issue. With a credit card you can call and ask them to bump your limit up. Debit card? Nope. You're stuck with whatever's in your account. Same problem hits ATMs - there's usually a daily withdrawal cap. So if you're trying to make a big purchase and you only have access to what the ATM lets you pull out in 24 hours, you're just out of luck.
Fraud protection is another thing people sleep on. If your debit card gets stolen and you don't catch it for like 60+ days, you could be liable for everything. Even if you call immediately, the bank takes up to two weeks to reverse charges. That's brutal if you're living paycheck to paycheck and need that money now. Credit cards have way better protection for this.
And here's the thing that really matters long-term - debit cards do absolutely nothing for your credit score. Banks don't report your debit card activity to credit bureaus. So all those transactions? Invisible. Doesn't help you build credit at all, and credit scores affect everything - loans, apartment rentals, even job applications.
So yeah, debit cards are convenient for keeping yourself from overspending, but the disadvantages of debit card usage are legit. Worth thinking about whether you actually want to rely on them as much as you do.
