India BRICS Summit Wants to Connect Global MSMEs Under One Global Roof

The ongoing India BRICS Summit in Hyderabad aims to bring all Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) under one global sector. These sectors are usually referred to as the backbone of a developing country, and they drive industrial growth, generate jobs, and play an important role in a nation’s GDP. Thousands of such MSMEs operate across emerging economies, running medium to small enterprise businesses.

BRICS member India alone employs over 110 million people in the MSME sector, providing jobs to rural and urban areas. Thousands of MSMEs operate in designated industrial estates and are the heartbeat of the economy. MSMEs, despite being small and medium enterprises, contribute roughly 30% to India’s GDP, which is roughly $4.2 trillion. This is a collective number, and they also contribute to the country’s 45% of total exports.

The BRICS Entrepreneurs Alliance (BEA) in India proposed to make all member nations’ MSMEs come under a single roof. The proposal was submitted by Dr. Bhaskar Jyoti Sonowal, who has been recently elected President of the BEA global forum. This marks a significant milestone as clubbing MSMEs into one can change the alliances’ direction.

The BEA has only submitted the MSME as a proposal, and BRICS will discuss this at the India summit this year. The decisions are consensus-based, and all members have to agree on the proposal. If an agreement does take place, it would reshape how the MSMEs operate in developing countries. These businesses combined bring in revenues worth billions, and can power the alliance for future growth.

India Chairs the 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi, and the country generates the highest income from MSMEs compared to other members. So India will have a bigger say in the proposal, as they are the lion’s share of the market. The upcoming summit will decide if the MSMEs will be brought under one ambit.
