I found it interesting to note that the altcoin season index is now at 25. Those who follow the market know that this number from CoinMarketCap says a lot about where capital is flowing at the moment.
Basically, what happens is this: they take the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, exclude stablecoins and wrapped tokens, and compare their performance against Bitcoin over a 90-day window. If 75% or more of the altcoins manage to outperform Bitcoin, then they declare an altcoin season. Below that, it’s Bitcoin dominance.
With 25, we are far from that 75 threshold. It means only a small fraction of altcoins are managing to generate higher returns than BTC. It’s clearly a Bitcoin-dominated scenario.
What’s interesting is that historically, these periods of low readings on the altcoin season index don’t mean that altcoins are dead. Quite the opposite. If you look at 2020, the index stayed low for a while, and then in early 2021, it shot above 75. That’s when that legendary altcoin season began.
The pattern I see repeating is that when Bitcoin is dominating like this, capital tends to consolidate in it during more uncertain market phases. After BTC stabilizes and enters consolidation, investors start seeking higher returns and migrate to altcoins. It’s a natural sequence.
At this moment, with the altcoin season index so low, only altcoins with truly strong catalysts are able to decouple. I’m talking about projects with significant mainnet updates, relevant partnerships, or even specific sectors like DePIN that have their own dynamics.
For those investing in altcoins, this is like a filtering period. It separates projects with solid fundamentals from those just riding the speculative wave. If you’re accumulating, now is the time to focus on projects with clear roadmaps and active development.
The altcoin season index also serves as a risk management tool. If you’re building a heavy portfolio in altcoins in this scenario, you risk underperforming compared to a strategy focused on Bitcoin. So it makes sense to align your allocation with the current market regime.
Historically, the transition from Bitcoin dominance to altcoin season follows a pattern: Bitcoin appreciates significantly, gains media attention, then stabilizes, and capital starts flowing into altcoins. The triggers are usually periods of BTC stability above key psychological levels, new liquidity entering from traditional markets, or major technological upgrades that renew confidence in a particular ecosystem.
With the altcoin season index at 25, it’s safe to say that the market is probably still in the early stages of this sequence. Bitcoin continues with momentum and investor attention.
In the end, keeping an eye on this index along with on-chain analysis and project fundamentals provides a much clearer view of where the opportunities are. It’s a trend confirmation tool, not an exact prediction, but it helps a lot in navigating these cycles.
