I just read a very interesting interview with Vlad Tenev, the CEO of Robinhood, and there are some points that are really worth analyzing about where all this is heading.

First, something that surprised me: Generation Z is opening retirement accounts at an average age of 19. That is much earlier than previous generations did. Vlad Tenev emphasizes that this generation is the most aware of retirement and long-term investing we have ever seen. That speaks to a real mental shift in how young people view their finances. It’s not just FOMO about cryptocurrencies; there’s a more serious mindset about planning.

Then there’s the issue of the massive transfer of wealth coming in the next 8 to 10 years. Vlad Tenev sees this as a huge opportunity for Robinhood and, honestly, for the entire fintech sector. When that wealth is transferred to younger, digital generations, platforms that understand how to serve these users will be in a privileged position.

Now, what is truly disruptive: Vlad Tenev mentions that by 2040, markets will operate 24/7, 365 days a year. And this is not a random prediction; it’s because technology is making it possible. Imagine being able to trade stocks at 3 a.m. on a Sunday. By the end of this year, stock tokens should offer clear advantages over traditional brokerage accounts.

Tokenization is the key here. Vlad Tenev explains that tokenized assets enable continuous markets, which would revolutionize market access. The U.S. is moving toward allowing 24/7 trading of tokenized assets with low commissions. Vlad Tenev estimates that we are about 90% ready for this on a mass scale.

He also touches on an interesting topic about DeFi. Vlad Tenev recognizes that decentralized finance represents a significant innovation, something different from what the traditional financial system can offer. That apparent chaos in DeFi is part of its potential.

Another thing that caught my attention: developer participation in Robinhood Chain has exceeded expectations. That suggests there is real interest in building on this infrastructure. But Vlad Tenev is also realistic about the main challenge: curation. With so many products and applications, the real challenge will be filtering what offers real value to users.

In summary, what I see is a clear vision that financial markets are in the midst of a profound transformation. Generation Z, wealth transfer, tokenization, and 24/7 markets are not isolated trends; they are pieces of the same puzzle. Vlad Tenev and others in the industry are positioning themselves for a completely different financial reality in the coming years.
