CoinWorld News reports that on the same day Google signed a confidential contract, it quietly withdrew from the Pentagon's drone swarm competition. The competition is led by the Special Operations Command Defense Autonomous Operations Group and the Defense Innovation Unit, with a prize pool of up to $100 million. Google notified the government of its withdrawal a few weeks after successfully qualifying, citing internal ethical reviews, while outside sources described it as "resource constraints." Several Google employees involved in the project expressed disappointment. Meanwhile, Google revised its existing contract with the Pentagon to allow the military to use its AI for "all lawful government purposes," including classified work. A Google spokesperson stated that this was just a routine adjustment to consumer-grade security filters and emphasized that "AI should not be used in autonomous weapons without proper human oversight."
