Bitcoin mining company MARA establishes a foundation, with the initial $100k donation to be allocated based on community voting

April 28 News, Bitcoin mining company MARA Chairman and CEO Fred Thiel stated at the “Bitcoin 2026” conference that the company has established a foundation. The Mara Foundation will operate independently of MARA’s core business, focusing on the long-term security of the Bitcoin network, ecological resilience, and mass adoption. Funding directions include quantum computing threat research, open-source developer support, self-custody education, and policy advocacy.
As the first initiative, the Mara Foundation will open voting to the community to decide the allocation of a $100k donation, with candidate organizations including: Qala, dedicated to multilingual Bitcoin technology education; the 256 Foundation, focused on open-source mining hardware and software development; and Cet, which uses Bitcoin as an incentive mechanism to provide low-cost wireless network services to global southern communities. Voting is now open, with the deadline set for April 30.
