At my colleague’s younger brother’s wedding last time, I was asked to be the gift-list registrar, and then I ran into an extremely ridiculous scene.

After a man reported 500 as the gift, he suddenly pulled out a handwritten IOU. It said that Zhang (—the groom himself )—had borrowed 10,000 yuan from him, and the date was six years ago.
The man claimed that Zhang had been owing him money for 6 years and still wouldn’t pay it back. Today, he said he wanted to “settle the debt with the gift,” and he told me to top him up with 9,500! This was the first time I’d ever seen such a move.
The groom ran over, wanting to pull him aside and talk, but he stood there guarding the accounting table, shouting at the top of his lungs, “Pay back what you owe—that’s only right!” More and more onlookers gathered. The groom was embarrassed and, gritting his teeth, asked me to count out 9,500 and give it to him.
The man took the money and left without even taking a sip of the wedding wine. This isn’t “delivering gifts”—it’s clearly here to “clear the账,” not make small talk.
