Bitcoin Mining Company MARA Establishes Foundation, Community to Vote on Initial $100,000 Donation Allocation

On April 28, Fred Thiel, Chairman and CEO of Bitcoin mining company MARA, announced at the ‘Bitcoin 2026’ conference that the company has established a foundation. The Mara Foundation will operate independently from MARA’s core business, focusing on the long-term security, ecological resilience, and widespread adoption of the Bitcoin network. Funding areas include research on quantum computing threats, support for open-source developers, education on self-custody, and policy advocacy. As its first initiative, the Mara Foundation will open voting to the community to decide the allocation of a $100,000 donation. The candidate organizations are: Qala, which is dedicated to multilingual Bitcoin technology education; the 256 Foundation, focused on open-source mining hardware and software development; and Cet, which provides low-cost wireless network services to communities in the Global South using Bitcoin as an incentive mechanism. Voting is currently open and will close on April 30.
