Over 1,000 measles cases confirmed in South Africa within 15 weeks
South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases released a report on the 20th stating that the measles outbreak in South Africa has been continuously spreading recently, with over a thousand confirmed cases reported nationwide within 15 weeks. The report shows that from December 29, 2025, to April 12, 2026, a total of 1,076 confirmed measles cases were reported across the country, involving all 9 provinces. Among them, Western Cape Province reported the highest number of confirmed cases, reaching 554. The report also indicates that most confirmed cases are children aged 1 to 14 years, totaling 731 cases, accounting for 67.9% of all confirmed cases. The report calls on healthcare personnel to strengthen measles outbreak surveillance, improve case reporting, laboratory testing, and contact tracing, while also urging local authorities to conduct measles outbreak risk assessments, enhance vaccination efforts, and increase health education and publicity.
