Google employees urge CEO Pichai to prevent the U.S. military from using their AI technology

Mars Finance News reported on April 28 that more than 560 Google employees have jointly sent a letter to CEO Sundar Pichai, urging him to refuse to allow the U.S. government to use Google’s artificial intelligence technology for classified military operations. The letter says, “We hope to see artificial intelligence benefit humanity rather than being used for inhumane or extremely harmful purposes. This includes, but is not limited to, lethal autonomous weapons and mass surveillance.” Two participants said that the letter addressed to Pichai was coordinated and initiated by employees of Google’s AI research lab DeepMind. Among the signatories, two-fifths come from the AI division, with the cloud business division accounting for a similar proportion; the rest are from other teams within Alphabet, including more than 18 senior employees such as directors and vice presidents signing the letter.
