OpenAI gets more room beyond Azure exclusivity, while Microsoft shifts toward long-term AI revenue.
📌 The revised agreement announced on April 27, 2026 marks a major reset in the OpenAI–Microsoft relationship, as Microsoft’s license to OpenAI’s AI technology is no longer exclusive, though it still runs through 2032.
💡 OpenAI can now sell ChatGPT and its AI models across more cloud platforms, while Azure remains its main infrastructure partner and will still be prioritized when it can meet deployment needs.
🔎 The key change is in cash flow: Microsoft will stop sharing revenue with OpenAI, while OpenAI will continue paying Microsoft 20% of revenue through 2030, subject to an undisclosed total payment cap.
⚖️ Removing the AGI-linked condition makes the deal less complex and lowers the risk of future disputes as OpenAI expands further into enterprise AI and non-Azure cloud infrastructure.
📊 Microsoft shares showed limited reaction after the news, suggesting the market sees this more as a strategic reset than a negative shock. Longer term, OpenAI gains more growth flexibility, while Microsoft keeps an important financial stake in the AI ecosystem.
