CryptoWorld News reports that, at the 2026 Bitcoin Conference, Joe Kelly, Nick Bugeich, and Zach Herbert believe that Bitcoin self-custody should be regarded as a civil liberty. Bugeich emphasized that private property rights must be extended to digital assets such as Bitcoin. Attendees discussed the growing momentum to define Bitcoin self-custody as a protected civil liberty. Bugeich stated that private property rights are the foundation of American principles and must be extended to digital assets. He noted that history shows that under pressure, governments confiscate assets, while self-custody can protect assets from centralized confiscation. Herbert described self-custody as a “gateway drug” to broader digital security practices and stressed its importance for sovereignty, privacy, and core American values. Bugeich also mentioned that although pushing for protections through legislation remains difficult, the Bitcoin community should contact their representatives to promote protections for self-custody.
