Canada's "C-25 Powerful Free Election Act" has passed the second reading in Parliament and entered the committee review stage, proposing to ban the use of cryptocurrencies for political donations. The bill classifies crypto assets along with promissory notes, prepaid payment instruments, and other similar items as "difficult-to-trace sources of funds," applicable to political parties, candidates, and third-party campaign advertising agencies, and requires that illegal donations be refunded or turned over to the treasury within 30 days. Previously, Canada allowed crypto donations starting in 2019, but actual usage has been limited; the UK has implemented a similar ban, while the US still permits crypto political donations.
