I just found out about something quite important that probably went unnoticed by many. Italy’s largest bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, has just revealed a position of $96 millones in spot bitcoin ETFs. This isn’t a small amount coming from such a conservative institution.
What’s interesting is that this wasn’t a media announcement. It came out in its Q4 2024 13F filing, first reported by CoinDesk. But think about it: one of the biggest European banks, with approximately 1.1 billones de euros in assets under management, decided to allocate significant capital to bitcoin through regulated ETFs.
But there’s more. Sanpaolo didn’t just put money into bitcoin. It has $184 millones in put options on MicroStrategy, which is the company that accumulates bitcoin as a balance sheet reserve. It also has smaller but strategic positions in Solana ($4.3M in its staking ETF) and Circle ($4.4M in shares). This isn’t a random investment. It’s a carefully designed portfolio.
What catches my attention is the timing. MiCA, the European regulation on cryptoassets, fully came into effect in 2024. Suddenly, European banks have a clear legal framework. And Sanpaolo was one of the first to make a move. Other major banks in Italy will be under pressure now. Why Sanpaolo—and not them?
This is the difference between speculation and real institutional adoption. Spot bitcoin ETFs offer something banks needed: regulated exposure, without the operational complications of custodializing crypto directly. It’s familiar, it’s liquid, it’s transparent.
What’s probably coming next is interesting. More European banks are going to start exploring similar allocations. We may see the development of internal custody services, structured products, and advisory services for high net worth clients. The crypto ecosystem is moving from being just a retail-trader thing to becoming a legitimate part of institutional portfolios.
Sanpaolo’s move is almost a marker that the era of institutional adoption in crypto has already arrived. This isn’t speculation. It’s serious capital from serious institutions, entering through regulated channels. The cryptocurrency market has just grown.
