There is something quite controversial happening with the new app from 2Wai. It is designed to create digital representations of deceased individuals, allowing you to interact with them through AI. It sounds like a futuristic idea, but the community's reaction has been quite fierce.
This iOS app from 2Wai was released in beta in November 2025, and it works by allowing users to upload videos, audio, and text descriptions to create a HoloAvatar. The FedBrain technology that 2Wai uses processes everything locally, so they claim your data is safer. The promotional video features actor Calum Worthy, and it has been viewed nearly 40 million times.
But that's where things get uncomfortable. People are unhappy. They call this product "obsessive," "inhumane," and say that 2Wai is exploiting the grief of the bereaved. There are real legitimate concerns here too — legal experts point out that these "death robots" exist in a legal gray area, with unclear regulations about who has the rights to use the data of the deceased.
This isn't a new idea. There are similar apps like HereAfter AI and Replika that have existed, but what 2Wai is doing seems more controversial. In fact, concerns about AI voice and visual technology have been clearly highlighted, even leading to a Hollywood strike in July 2024. So, this isn't just a personal ethical issue but a broader debate about how AI should be used.
