Garlinghouse finally clarified what many in the XRP community have been waiting years to hear. During the recent Sydney conference, Ripple's CEO directly explained that there is no single master switch that people imagine. Instead, Ripple has been turning on hundreds or even thousands of smaller switches over time.
The phrase "flip the switch" has become a sort of meme within the XRP community, but its origin is more mundane. Back in January 2019, Garlinghouse mentioned in an interview that banks were ready to take the step and start using XRP in production through xRapid, leaving behind pilot tests. The community took that idea and turned it into something much bigger: the belief that one day, suddenly, everything would change overnight.
But that was never the plan. Garlinghouse was clear in Sydney: progress comes from small, cumulative steps. Each individual move may seem minor, almost insignificant, but when thousands of them add up, the impact is exponential. Some of these developments have taken longer than people expected, he admitted, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t happening.
While speaking with the more than 400 global participants at the conference, he emphasized that more and more of these switches are being turned on. They don’t always make headlines, but they are happening. Since 2023, Ripple has invested around 3 billion dollars in strategic acquisitions precisely to connect the traditional financial system with the decentralized world.
The interesting thing is that when everything finally converges and it seems to happen suddenly, probably no one will be able to point to a single event that caused it. It will be the result of a decade of steady work, of thousands of small steps that most people never noticed while they were happening. Garlinghouse expressed genuine optimism about 2026 and the years ahead, considering that the true impact will come when everything has accumulated.
The community also plays a role in this. During his current tour, Garlinghouse noticed the passion especially in Australia, where members express themselves, correct misinformation, and fight FUD. Those actions count as more switches being turned on. So if you’re waiting for that dramatic moment of instant transformation, it probably won’t come that way. But the switches keep turning on, one by one, quietly accumulating toward something greater.
