On April 27, the case of Elon Musk suing OpenAI went to court. Legal experts and prediction markets generally believe that Musk’s chances in the Oakland federal court are slim. Since March, his average probability of winning on the Kalshi platform has been around 40%, significantly lower than the 57% he boasted about in January when he expressed eagerness for the trial. Jeff Ward, a clinical professor of law at Duke University and director of the Duke Center for Law and Technology, commented on Musk’s odds: ‘There is a possibility of winning, but savvy investors wouldn’t bet on him.’ The remedies Musk is seeking include: demanding that OpenAI’s for-profit subsidiary pay damages potentially exceeding $180 billion to its non-profit parent company; removing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman from their leadership positions; and reversing OpenAI’s recent shift towards a more traditional governance structure. Even achieving just one of these proposed changes would significantly disrupt OpenAI’s plans for an IPO, which could happen as soon as the end of this year. (Dongxin News Agency)
