According to Beating Monitoring, OpenAI Developer Experience Lead Romain Huet revealed in a reply to a user question on X that starting from GPT-5.4, the Codex model line (OpenAI’s previously independently maintained series of models dedicated to programming, which is different from the desktop application of the same name) has been merged into the main model system and is no longer updated separately. GPT-5.5 further improves on this basis, with significant enhancements in agentic coding (agent-driven autonomous programming), computer use (controlling computers to complete tasks), and other areas.

The practical impact of this merge for developers is: there is no longer a need to choose between a general model and a programming model; a single model now covers dialogue, reasoning, and programming capabilities.
