Thai Prime Minister Anutin stated on the 23rd that the Office of the National Security Council of Thailand has confirmed the abolition of a maritime memorandum with Cambodia. After attending a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office that day and speaking to reporters, Anutin said that the memorandum regarding the issue of overlapping maritime areas, signed between Cambodia and former Prime Minister Thaksin during his administration, will be abolished. This move does not require notifying Cambodia, and the cabinet will review the relevant decision as soon as possible.

Thai Navy Chief of Staff He Dabu · Thibida Geng told reporters that the reason for abolishing the memorandum is that it has been in use for many years but has achieved no progress. At present, Cambodia has joined the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and Thailand and Cambodia can negotiate within the framework of the convention. This memorandum was signed in 2001, and its focus is on negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia regarding maritime boundaries, including the joint utilization of oil resources. Resolutions of Thailand’s National Security Council generally need to be submitted for approval by the Thai cabinet in order to take effect. (Xinhua News Agency)
