Surge in Cryptocurrency Kidnapping Cases in France: 135 Incidents in Two and a Half Years, Involving Minors and 75 Detained

On April 25, the French Organized Crime Prosecutor’s Office (PNACO) announced that since 2023, a total of 135 cases of kidnapping or attempted kidnapping related to cryptocurrency have been recorded in France. Data shows that among the 12 cases currently being followed by PNACO, 88 individuals have been formally investigated, including over 10 minors, and approximately 75 individuals are in detention awaiting trial. The prosecution stated that the increase in these cases is due to the judicial authorities’ integration of multiple dispersed cases to address the rapidly evolving criminal patterns associated with crypto assets. The data indicates that there were 18 related cases in 2024, which rose to 67 in 2025, and has reached 47 so far in 2026. PNACO pointed out that this trend in crime is closely linked to the increased use of cryptocurrency and has become an important new form of organized crime.
