DTE proposes $474M Michigan electric rate hike

DTE Energy plans to file a $474.3 million electric rate case in Michigan next week, with a conditional promise to freeze rates for two years if certain customer projects come online and regulatory approvals are received. This proposal coincides with a legislative push in Michigan to increase the minimum time between rate cases from one to three years, a move supported by the Michigan Public Service Commission Chair amidst public backlash over frequent rate increases. The proposed hike aims to fund the conversion of DTE’s Belle River Power Plant from coal to natural gas and develop the 220-MW Trenton Channel Energy Center, while consumer advocates criticize the conditional rate freeze as a “smoke-and-mirrors” tactic.
