The bill to limit Trump's war powers was vetoed by the U.S. Senate for the fifth time
The U.S. Senate on the 22nd again rejected a bill to limit President Trump’s war powers.
This is the fifth time since the U.S. launched military action against Iran in late February that the Senate has vetoed a bill aimed at restricting Trump’s authority to use force regarding Iran.
The bill, initiated by Democrats, demands that Trump end military operations against Iran and obtain Congressional approval before taking further military action against Iran.
On that day, the Senate vote resulted in 46 votes in favor, 51 votes against, with 3 abstentions, and the bill was not passed.
The Republican Party holds 53 seats out of the 100 seats in the Senate.
Senate Minority Leader and Democrat Chuck Schumer said before the vote, “The more Trump delays in getting the U.S. out of this war, the deeper the U.S. will sink into the quagmire, and the harder it will be for him to extricate himself.”
Schumer also said that Democrats will continue to push for weekly votes on bills to limit the president’s war powers until Republicans “wake up and help us end this war.”
According to the U.S. Constitution, only Congress has the authority to declare war.
The 1973 law passed by the U.S. Congress stipulates that the U.S. president can only undertake limited military actions without Congressional approval in cases of attacks against the U.S. or imminent threats that trigger a national emergency.
In response to the recent U.S. military action against Iran, several Democratic lawmakers voiced their opposition, criticizing the operation as “illegal” due to its lack of Congressional authorization. (Xinhua News Agency)
