I noticed a major change in the crypto landscape this year. David Sacks, the former crypto czar of the Trump administration, has moved into a new role as co-chair of the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. This choice is quite interesting because it shows how the administration's strategy regarding digital assets has evolved.
Is he able to make the transition? It's simple — the crypto czar position is just a special government employee role with a 130-day limit per 12 months, and his time was just about up. But instead of stepping back, his influence grew even more through PCAST. He himself said that in this role, he can provide recommendations not only on AI but on the broader technology landscape.
This council has up to 24 members and was established way back in 2001. But this is the first time it has had this much star power — including the co-founder of a major exchange, Marc Andreessen from a16z, and other heavyweights in the tech industry. It really feels like a dream team.
Now, why is this move important? Look at what Sacks accomplished during his tenure as crypto czar. He pushed for the appointment of two new commissioners — at the SEC and CFTC. Under the new SEC Commissioner Paul Atkins, enforcement actions against the crypto industry decreased by 60% year-over-year in 2025. Meanwhile, the new CFTC commissioner Mike Selig became a vocal supporter of prediction markets, one of the most exciting applications of crypto today.
But the biggest win? The Genius Act of 2025. This is the landmark stablecoin legislation that brought federal supervision to stablecoins and cleared the way for banks and fintech companies to launch their own dollar tokens. This is truly a game-changer for the industry.
Sacks' transition to PCAST seems like a strategic move — a broader platform, greater influence. And based on his track record, this is no longer just about crypto. It’s about shaping the future of technology policy across the entire administration. A pretty significant shift, and it’s worth watching what happens in the coming months.
