France and Germany agree to promote joint development of the next-generation fighter jet
The leaders of France and Germany agreed on the 24th to continue negotiations on jointly developing the next-generation fighter jet. This project, seen as a hallmark initiative of Europe’s strengthened defense-industrial cooperation in the past decade, has been thrown into jeopardy because the two countries differ on issues such as leadership. On the morning of the 24th, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held talks in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, before attending an informal meeting of EU leaders, and they agreed to authorize their respective defense ministers to continue consultations on the matter. Macron said that the two sides would not only discuss the fighter-jet program, but also strengthen cooperation between the two countries across various defense fields. France and Germany announced in 2017 that they would jointly develop the “Future Air Combat System,” including next-generation fighter jets. Spain officially joined in 2019. However, Airbus’s German subsidiary and France’s Dassault Aviation have serious differences regarding work-share arrangements and technological leadership, which has hindered progress on the project.
