EU Adopts Russia Crypto Sanctions Package With Sector-Wide Ban Starting May 24, 2026

The EU Council adopted its 20th sanctions package against Russia, including a sector-wide ban on direct or indirect dealings with Russian crypto providers starting May 24, 2026. The package lets existing contracts run until that date and grants limited exceptions for EU diplomatic missions, certain EU citizens in Russia, and companies winding down business with member-state approval. The EU also expanded prohibited crypto assets to include RUBx and targeted support for sanctioned central bank digital currencies, mainly the digital ruble. The package also restricts workaround settlement intermediaries, 20 Russian banks, and four third-country banks linked to sanctions evasion or SPFS.
