Mixed Signals from Iran on Ceasefire; US-Iran Proposals Diverge

On April 22, Al Jazeera reported that Tohid Asadi, a professor at Tehran University, stated that regarding the ceasefire, Iran has received both positive and negative signals. Tehran has indicated that it will not negotiate under imposed conditions and terms. Comparing the initial 10-point and 15-point proposals from Iran and the US reveals a significant divergence in their positions. Iran’s distrust of the US, along with military rhetoric accompanying the potential failure of negotiations, casts a shadow over the current atmosphere. This serves as a warning that another round of confrontation may be imminent. Tehran still plans to use the Strait of Hormuz as a pressure point and bargaining chip in negotiations, attempting to assert jurisdiction over vessels passing through this strategically significant waterway. Iran has stated that the foundation of its foreign policy actions—especially concerning Israel—is that ‘either everyone is safe, or no one is safe.’ (Dongxin News Agency)
