According to Philippine media reports on the 23rd, the Philippine presidential palace has approved Vice President Sara Duterte’s application for an overseas vacation. According to the plan, Sara is scheduled to take a vacation in the Netherlands, South Korea, Belgium, Germany, and the United Kingdom from April 23 to May 15, and this trip will not cost any government funds. Philippine media reported that Sara’s trip abroad is extremely time-sensitive, taking place during a critical period when the Philippine House of Representatives is deliberating her impeachment case. At present, the Senate is preparing to receive the impeachment case from the House. Senate President Vicente Sotto recently said that if the House can complete the submission of the impeachment case before May 4, the Senate can convene on that day to form an impeachment tribunal and formally begin impeachment proceedings.

In the Philippine House of Representatives, pro-government lawmakers hold an absolute majority. In the impeachment case against Sara in 2025, the House quickly voted to pass the impeachment and submitted it to the Senate for trial. In July of the same year, the Philippine Supreme Court announced that, due to the impeachment process being unconstitutional, the impeachment proceedings would be terminated. Philippine analysts believe that the probability of this impeachment case being submitted to the Senate remains relatively high.

Sara is the eldest daughter of former Philippine President Duterte. Earlier this year, in February, she announced that she would run in the 2028 Philippine presidential election. At present, Duterte is also facing a difficult situation. The International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands, announced on the 23rd that it will put him on trial on three counts of so-called “crimes against humanity.” The court launched an investigation in 2018 into whether Duterte’s anti-drug campaign led by him involved violations of human rights, and Duterte is expected to be arrested in 2025.
