Just because Musk just dropped some interesting info about Tesla chips. The AI5 has finalized its tapeout and images of the component are already circulating, with the Tesla logo clearly visible on the casing. This is definitely an important moment for their internal strategy.
What catches my attention is the announced power: up to 40 times higher computing performance compared to the current HW4, plus 9 times more memory. That's huge for onboard vision and continuous video processing. More memory means visual models can be more sophisticated and handle longer sequences, which solves a real bottleneck for fully autonomous driving without supervision.
The timing also deserves attention: first samples at the end of 2026, mass production in 2027. And they will have TSMC and Samsung manufacture in parallel, which limits supply chain risks. The AI6 is already in development, so Tesla isn't slowing down.
But the truly revealing element is the return of Dojo. Tesla had paused its in-house training chip project to massively buy NVIDIA GPUs. The fact that Musk mentions Dojo3 means they haven't abandoned this path. They are now advancing on two fronts: inference with AI5 and AI6, and training with Dojo. It's a clear strategy to gradually reduce their dependence on NVIDIA.
The first Cybercabs, Optimus robots, and Tesla data centers will use AI5. It's interesting to see how Tesla is building its complete chip ecosystem, from Dojo for training to inference chips. This changes the game compared to before.
