Dozens of protestors rallied outside Citizens Bank headquarters in Providence, Rhode Island, calling on the financial institution to cease funding companies that operate federal immigration detention centers. The De-ICE Citizens Bank Coalition organized the protest during the bank’s annual shareholder meeting, alleging that Citizens Bank has provided over $2.5 billion in financing to private prison companies Corecivic and The GEO Group, which run ICE detention centers where 21 people have died in the last 18 months. A Citizens Bank spokesperson responded by stating the bank respects peaceful protest and stands by its clients who meet their high standards, while also highlighting the bank’s community investments and volunteer hours.
